Chronic Wasting Disease Risk Assessment, Prevention, and Surveillance

Understanding disease risk and utilizing prevention strategies to protect wildlife from disease threats like CWD

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) affects cervid species and is an ongoing threat to wild white-tailed deer and moose populations in New York State. Our system of risk-based surveillance, interagency prevention and response planning, and hunter education works to keep this devastating disease from New York State. We assist other states across the country in their efforts to identify CWD early in an outbreak and manage responses to the disease for improved outcomes.
