Jan Lovy

Fish Health Scientist

Jan is a fish health scientist in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Public and Ecosystem Health. He leads an aquatic animal health program focused on understanding and mitigating disease issues in fish populations. His research program combines field and experimental research to understand the pathology, epidemiology, and environmental drivers of fish diseases.

Prior to joining Cornell, Jan led a research program in fish disease ecology, focusing on parasitic diseases, as a Research Biologist and Principal Investigator at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Western Fisheries Research Center in Seattle, Washington. In this role, he worked closely with state, tribal, and federal agencies to support fish health in the recovery of threatened and endangered fish species.

Jan also previously led the state aquatic animal health program for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in the Office of Fish and Wildlife Health and Forensics, investigating fish kills, understanding disease drivers in wild fish populations, and supporting fish health in state-operated fish hatcheries.

Jan is focused on integrating his applied research priorities to support state, tribal, and federally identified fish conservation efforts.
